The movie Darius Goes West has inspired countless young and old alike. It is not just a documentary about Darius Weems who is living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, the number one genetic killer of children in the world, but a story about love, friendship, joy, hope, and sharing. It is not just a story, but a vehicle to raise funds for this devastating disease!

I am a faculty member at an Ohio medical school, who is also the Associate Director of the Office of Palliative Care. We hosted a showing of the movie with Darius and the eleven amazing young men who accompanied him on a journey across the country. Their presence became a catalyst for interest in the disease and more importantly for palliative care, by the over 1000 people who attended in Akron, Ohio.

We now have an active student interest group of future physicians and pharmacists who are more aware and sensitive to the needs of young people with life-limiting disease. As a result of interactions with Darius Weems and his “crew”, they understand that it is not about dying but about living life to the fullest and having a purpose for whatever time we have here on earth. To say Darius is inspirational is an understatement!

Young people with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy have a life expectancy of late teens or early twenties. Darius’ older brother passed away at nineteen. Darius is still a vibrant, fun-filled, energetic, young man who though physically limited to a wheelchair has a lesson to teach us all about living life in spite of limits. He knows that a cure will not come before he succumbs to the disease, yet wants a cure for the next generation of children with the disease. Talk about a lesson in love!

By having him on your show, you too could be a vehicle for Darius Weems to share his amazing story, garner interest about palliative care and fulfill a dream of a young man who has given so much to others. He deserves this 15 minutes of fame….

Sincerely,

Margy Piper Sanders
