Dear Oprah,
If I had to name one event that changed my senior year, put a hole in my legendary senioritis, it’d be the showing of the DVD “Darius Goes West”.
I remember trying to skip out that day. I didn’t want to go to “senior class”. It was dull. The teacher was notoriously long winded and self absorbed. I wanted to go practice my parts for the school play instead. That, I thought, was a much more worthy outlet for my precious time than some documentary.
But ahh, youth, you’re not all that.
“Darius Goes West” is a true life documentary of a brave, intelligent, amazing young man named Darius Weems. He doesn’t seem too special when you first meet him. Large, wannabe rapper, from nowhere georgia. Then his story unfolds.
Your original prejudices, assumptions, and hateful mental commentary melt away.
Darius Weems has duchanes muscular dystrophy, just like his now-dead brother. His biggest dream is to live up to what his brother wanted for him. But DMD gives him around twenty years, tops, to accomplish this - and by then he’s already lived fifteen of them.
His story continues, but I think that’s one of the most important parts. He doesn’t give up, sink into depression, anything like that. he fights. He lives. He struggles but he loves and cherishes every moment of it.
We have a very limited time on this earth. We have to use it wisely, not squander it away.
So if you’d please, bring Darius to your show. He’s got a shot at leaving something lasting, a cure and a voice and a deep love. He’s already changed my life in more ways than I could ever tell.

The Movie
Accompanied by his eleven best friends, Darius Weems, a fifteen-year-old living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), leaves home for the first time in his life. The rowdy crew sets a course for California where they hope to convince MTV to customize Darius's wheelchair on the hit show, Pimp My Ride. Darius Goes West has been enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of people of all ages all around the world.
The Movement
Darius Goes West is more than a film. The continuing story of Darius, his crew, and the tens of thousands of supporters they have met in their travels can be experienced on this website. This site is continually updated with short videos, blog posts, and innovative initiatives that aim to affect a cure for DMD.
