Views, Mazes, and Football in Chattanooga

September 23, 2008

Next for Darius Goes West was a trip to Chattanooga for a September 21 screening.

Our stop started with a radio interview set up by our host Josh McManus. Thanks, Josh and 102.3 WGOW!

Josh also got a buffet for breakfast for us from Blue Grass Grill–an excellent restaurant next to his office. Josh started CreateHere, a non-profit that seeks to enrich Chattanooga’s cultural community through grants, services for artists, and community projects. We were blown away by Josh’s community organizing skills.

Josh and CreateHere co-founder Sheldon Grizzle then took us to Lookout Mountain. Josh showed Darius the incredible views of the city he loves.

Logan wanted to make sure Darius got the best view of the waterfall possible, and John Hadden was sure to film the brutality.

Darius also met Andrew Kean, whose family owns and operates Rock City. Andrew suggested we check out the corn maze at the base of Lookout Mountain.

Here’s Darius in the maze, sneaking up on unsuspecting crew members.

The night before the screening, Josh and Sheldon found us a spot to tailgate and watch our Georgia Bulldogs take on (and beat!) the Sun Devils of Arizona State. Go Dawgs!

The screening itself took place at the beautiful Contra Passo theater around Main Street Chattanooga. Chattanooga is undergoing an urban renewal movement spearheaded in part by many people who made this screening happen.

Darius Goes West is an example of people supporting art and art trying to give back to the community, and it was inspiring to spend time in a community with similar values. Thank you so much, Josh, Sheldon, and Chattanooga!
