The Key to Chico

March 11, 2009

Quote of the day: “When a place is accessible, we let them know. But when it isn’t, they lose out on business from 12 guys.”—Darius, talking to the crowd at our Chico screening about how he handles places that aren’t accessible to people with disabilities.

From the Nueva School, Darius and crew high-tailed it to Chico, California, for a screening that night.

The screening and question-and-answer session was held at the Sierra Nevada Big Room, which is a great venue for watching a movie.

Sierra Nevada is a big part of the community of Chico, and we were grateful to join that family with our visit.

After the Q-and-A, Chico hit the DGW merchandise with a vengeance to show solidarity with our cause.

Mary Ann Weston (pictured, above Darius) organized our stay in Chico. She did a great job assembling the awesome crowd.

Mary Ann has hosted a lot of DGW screenings without the crew being able to visit. So when Darius was actually there in person, she pulled out all the stops in making it a success.

The next day, Michael Iles provided us with free lunch at the Sierra Nevada Taproom and Restaurant, where he’s a chef. As you might be able to tell from the picture of Darius and Sam, the food was delicious.

Then we went to the Boys & Girls Club of Chico to hang out with supporters. We played video games…

and joined in some table tennis action.

Later, Darius got interviewed by news outlets at the center.

Then, Andy Holcombe, the former mayor and a current councilperson of Chico, presented Darius with a key to the city.

Then, students at the center presented Darius with a check of donation money they had raised.

Way to go, Chico!

Thanks so much, Mary Ann, Sierra Nevada Brewery, Chico City Council, and Boys and Girls Club, for making our stay in Chico so memorable!

A long overdue comment, but coming across this again brought a HUGE smile to my face. Such a great event that I was happy to be a part of. Thanks to Mary Ann and the crew, I was lucky to host Darius and the crew at the Boys and Girls Club.
