The first treatment for Duchenne muscular dystrophy has been approved by the FDA…and you helped!

September 19, 2016

Historic News! On the heels of Big Daddy’s 27th birthday, the first ever treatment for Duchenne muscular dystrophy has been approved by the FDA! If you’re a DGW fan, then you know we’ve literally been waiting a lifetime to say those words.

Many incredible DMD orgs have ushered in this momentous day. They’ve worked tirelessly to raise funds and awareness, and they even organized a successful protest of the FDA’s initial (and bizarre) hesitancy to validate the treatment. The therapeutic method is called Exon Skipping, and at long last, the resulting drug, Eteplirsen, has passed!

Poetically, DGW’s beneficiary Charley’s Fund has been supporting Exon Skipping research since 2005….the year that Darius left home for the first time. That means that if you’ve supported DGW over the years, your energy and funds contributed to this victory. This treatment does not affect Darius or Charley’s particular strain of Muscular Dystrophy, but a win for any members of the DMD community is a win for all. Pop in your copy of the film or head to Netflix and say it with us one time: “D.G.W. Know About It!”.
