Syracuse Again, Pt. III

May 07, 2009

Quote of the Day: “Technical foul on Mr. Smith!”—Heather, referee in the crew-vs.-faculty wheelchair basketball game, T-ing up JDMS’s principal.

Day three in the ‘Cuse was packed with even more fun!

First up was a return to Jamesville Dewitt Middle School…

where D was welcomed back like a king.

JDMS is the home of Heather Meyer, Melissa, Dardaris, Laura Lenox, and a body of students, faculty, and community members that helped put Darius’s story in the hands of every public middle school in the country.

Check out the video above (made by Heather) that chronicles some of the incrediblly hard work these guys did to spread the word.

It was a huge treat to be able to thank JDMS in person…

and I don’t think they minded having us there, either.

During an assembly, we also got the chance to thank Ms. Lenox’s class, who made a wonderful quilt and card for Darius.

Thank you, JDMS!

Next, we were off to Bishop Ludden School, where D spoke to a class.

Next, he got miked up for a class assembly in the gym.

Students welcomed us with raps…

and presentations…

and a rock band that played when we came in.

We had to literally grab Jason and pull him away from the drums. (It took six of us, along with D pushing. (John’s arms are still sore.)

Thank you, Bishop Ludden School!

After the two school visits, D and the gang hit the VFW for a night of silent auction, raffles, and hanging out with some of the folks from Two Smiles One Hope, including Matt Willis (pictured, left).

Melissa introduced the crew…

and the dance floor was never empty.

That was thanks to the musical stylings of Alter Ego…

led by Michael Dardaris, principal of Driver Middle School.

Fresh off a late night of raising money and awareness, the next day saw a wheelchair basketball game that pitted JDMS faculty (shown) against the DGW crew.

The crew had some help, though, with JDMS student raffle winners filling out our roster.

With D as our coach…

an unstoppable fast break…

an unrelenting fan base…

and secretly playing 6-vs-5 for the 4th quarter, Darius Goes West triumphed in an epic game.

With proceeds from the night going to the cause, it was the type of fun fund-raising that we’ve come to associate with the great folks at Syracuse.

After the game, we headed to Jack, Caleb, and Nolan’s for a relaxing dinner with friends…

with Nolan and Jack driving us there, of course.

Thank you Syracuse!
