Sixth Annual Darius Goes West Day

This year is going to be even more insane than last year. We have almost a WEEK of exciting activities planned for the sixth annual DGW Day.
1. A poker tournament with a Vegas sized grand prize
2. A massive Carnival
3. A local screening of the film
4. A Rock ‘N Rap Concert featuring Modern Skirts, Yelawolf & the Nappy Roots!

WHAT: DEALING FOR DARIUS/CASINO FOR A CURE WHEN: Wednesday & Thursday, July 21-22 WHERE: Lucky Dawg Billiards (1120 Mitchell Bridge Rd.) DON’T MISS IT BECAUSE: The winner of this two-night Texas Hold ‘Em poker tournament (Wednesday & Thursday) will get to go to Las Vegas and play with the pros at the Hard Rock on October 2 in a tournament currently being organized to celebrate Darius’ 21st birthday. Second, third, and fourth place winners will receive online credits at FullTiltpoker.com (click here for details). Other great prizes will be up for grabs at Casino for a Cure (Thursday night only). WHAT: FAMILY FUN NIGHT/CARNIVAL WHEN: Friday, July 23; 5:00 - 9:00 PM WHERE: 2152 W. Broad St. (Old Farmer’s Market, between Clarke County 4-H & KFC) DON’T MISS IT BECAUSE: It’s FREE and fun for all ages. Ride a mechanical bull, shoot some hoops, ride a pony, dunk an Athens-Clarke County Mayoral candidate (all five, plus Mayor Heidi Davison, have agreed to take a turn in the dunk tank!), get your face painted, “pimp” out a Goslabi t-shirt, play Big D in video games, and much, much more. Chef Burney Dobbs will be manning the grill, and DJ Kevin Cheek will be spinning tunes…AND taking the Goslabi Challenge, along with some local celebs (names TBA soon). RAIN OR SHINE! WHAT: DARIUS GOES WEST SCREENING WHEN: Saturday, July 24; 7:00 PM WHERE: Athens Cine (234 W. Hancock Ave.) DON’T MISS IT BECAUSE: It’s a rare chance to see (or see again) our multi-award-winning documentary on the big screen. A Q&A with Darius and the crew will follow the screening. TICKETS: $5 at the door (with all proceeds benefiting Duchenne muscular dystrophy research). 
WHAT: MODERN SKIRTS AND NAPPY ROOTS IN CONCERT WITH SPECIAL GUEST YELAWOLF WHEN: Saturday, July 24; 9:00 PM WHERE: New Earth Music Hall (227 W. Dougherty St.) DON’T MISS IT BECAUSE: Modern Skirts will rock the house, followed by rapper Yelawolf (who just signed with Interscope), then a performance featuring Skinny, Scales, and Big V. DGW’s very own, Big Daddy Weems, will also take the stage to unveil two new raps! The Movie
Accompanied by his eleven best friends, Darius Weems, a fifteen-year-old living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), leaves home for the first time in his life. The rowdy crew sets a course for California where they hope to convince MTV to customize Darius's wheelchair on the hit show, Pimp My Ride. Darius Goes West has been enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of people of all ages all around the world.
The Movement
Darius Goes West is more than a film. The continuing story of Darius, his crew, and the tens of thousands of supporters they have met in their travels can be experienced on this website. This site is continually updated with short videos, blog posts, and innovative initiatives that aim to affect a cure for DMD.

I was at the Clarke County Courthouse the day DGW left town to begin their adventure! I’m looking forward to the carnival on July 23rd at the Old Farmer’s Market to help raise funds for Darius. I’ll be giving away balloon creations and asking for tips…of course the tips will be for Darius, so tell all your friends to come out and support Darius!!! I look forward to seeing ya’ll!!!
