D’s Big Day at Garrison Forest and Baltimore

March 30, 2009

Quote of the Day: “Are any of you guys, like, single?”—first question at our question-and-answer session with students of Garrison Forest.

After our stay in DC, Darius and crew headed north for a visit to Baltimore.

We had Gabriela Luis with us. Gabi is a friend of the crew who’s really helped us out on screenings and DGW initiatives, and it was great to have her along.

On the way to Baltimore, we all stopped at Garrison Forest School. Barb Ackerman, a teacher at Garrison Forest, led the coordination of our visit, and she did a great job.

Major props also go to Susie (pictured), Holly, and Julianna, who helped bring us to GFS. Susie actually sent the first email to Darius Goes West about coming to Garrison Forest.

Garrison Forest is an awesome school, and they gave us a great welcome. At the upper-school assembly, students showed Darius the love with a student video (directed by Julianna), an acapella song, and a step team performance.

They even gave Darius not one, but two raps—one by the teachers, and one by the students! It was a blast. Check out the video above. Who do you think did a better job?

Either way, both rapping performances—along with all the other creative ways GFS welcomed us—really made us smile, as did the HUGE fund-raising check students presented D with to help him on his cause.

Following the lead of Washington state’s Sammamish High School, Garrison Forest had a Goslabi challenge fundraiser, this time with Logan eating the stuff instead of Darius.

It was extra spicy, and Logan’s stomach did NOT appreciate the antics as much as the rest of us did.

Unfortunately for Logan, right after the clean-up was lunch time.

As part of their fund-raising efforts, GFS raffled chances to have lunch with the crew. Great idea guys! And thanks, Lexi, for the incredible cupcakes!

Next, we were off to an assembly of middle school students, who had also watched Darius Goes West.

Not to be outdone by the upper-schoolers, middle-schoolers rapped as part of their welcome, too! Students also spoke about Darius’s effect on their lives, and they gave us a scrapbook. Thanks guys!

Next up was a student-led tour of campus.

Driver Daniel and writer Amble were a bit tired from all the excitement…

so, as this sequence shows…

Jason decided to give them BOTH a piggy-back ride—at the same time!

It was certainly impressive. He got about fifty yards with both of them on his back. Then, a squirrel distracted him, and Jason tossed off the other two crew members to take a closer look.

We had a great time hanging out with the incredible students, teachers, and administrators at Garrison Forest, all of whom helped make our visit a blast and a fund-raising success. Thank you, GFS!

Next, we headed to Baltimore’s Windup Space Bar and Arts Venue for a screening.

Thanks, Cathy and Diane. Diane teaches at Garrison Forest, and she and Cathy hosted us for the evening. Diane braved being sick to make sure we had everything we needed.

Thanks also to Russell for hooking us up with the venue.

The Windup Space is a really cool spot, and after the question-and-answer we got to hang out with audience members.

The crowd had a lot of Baltimore movers and shakers. We talked about how the economic downturn has affected us and our million-DVD goal, strategies for succeeding in spite of the downturn, and the rejuvenating power of going to great schools like Garrison Forest.

It was an action-packed day at GFS and Baltimore. Thank you so much, Diane, Cathy, Russell, Barb, Susie, and all the students, teachers, faculty, and parents at Garrison Forest, for making it fun and raising resources for the fight against DMD!
