DGW Heads Back to Mississippi

July 03, 2009

Quote of the Day: “We’re very, very close—really on the cusp”—geneticist Dr. Abdul-Raman, talking about a cure for DMD at DGW’s Mississippi Medical School screening.

After our Kentucky stop, the Darius Goes West crew headed southwest for a quick visit at Oxford, MS.

The screening was set up by Michael Stevens, president of Ole Miss’s Kappa Alpha fraternity.

Our visit marked a return to the distinctive Powerhouse Theater, a beautiful venue that’s played host to Darius Goes West in a past Oxford screening and on the film festival tour a couple years ago…

and it was great to reconnect with some of the folks in Oxford.

Thanks Michael, KA, and Oxford!

Though we had to leave soon, we stayed in the state with a trip to University of Mississippi Medical School, in Jackson. First up: a tour of the Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children.

The facility serves children across Mississippi, and the staff strives to give children the most fun environment possible. The place teems with color, with walls and even ceilings displaying artwork.

Art is a big part of the setting of Batson, with pieces donated by local and national artists, schools, and patients.

We had a blast at our visit. Props to our host Ashley Flynt for setting it up.

Ashley, a nursing student at University of Mississippi Medical Center, raised money from other students and presented a check to the crew after the screening…

where the crew was joined by Darius, Dr. Tyson from MDA, and Mississippi-based geneticist Dr. Abdul-Rhaman.

The experts provided important insights into the progress of DMD research and the vitality of more funding.

But Jason found himself apprehensive about sharing the stage with actual doctors: “A geneticist? He’s going to make me look dumb.”

Ashley, along with Megan, Danielle, Cristina, Melanie, and Jerry Clark, did an awesome job coordinating the screening…

and it’s always great to see a student body and a community so empowered by Darius’s message.

Thanks, Ashley, University of Mississippi Medical Center, and Jackson!

Don’t forget, you’re invited to DGW Weekend, July 17-18 in Athens, GA. It’s going to be a blast! (For more information, please read this blog, email or call DGW World Headquarters at 706-613-7237.)
