Quote of the Day: “Slow down, Andrew”—Darius, to a crew-member chowing down on Trix cereal.
Next up for D and gang was a trip to New Jersey’s Princeton University, where we were welcomed by Princeton Disabilities Awareness.
Our coordinator for this visit, long-time friend and past host Amy Coenen, is a Princeton alum now living in New York.
For this intimate screening, Amy had set out to find some of Princeton’s movers and shakers.
After the screening and the question-and-answer session, we all sat down for a dinner…
set up by PDA. We talked college-specific marketing and fund-raising deep into the night.
Thanks to Amy and PDA for coordinating, and to Princeton University for taking up the cause!
After New Jersey, we moved on to Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania, in Lock Haven, PA, where we were greeted with a picnic set up by Dr. Julie Lammel and coordinated by her and other members of LHU’s Recreation Management Program, including professors Judy Elliott and Lenny Long.
The weather was beautiful as VIP Darius rubbed elbows with students and faculty, including LHU’s president, Dr. Keith Miller.
Students from the program introduced the film…
and ensured that the auditorium was filled with their classmates.
After the movie, they presented Darius with a fund-raising check…
and encouraged their classmates to support Darius Goes West further by purchasing merchandise.
Thanks Julie, Judy, the Rec. Management program, students, and everyone at LHU!
Following the Lock Haven visit, we stayed in Pennsylvania with a trip to Penn State University.
Kellye Sweitzer, a PSU Recreation, Park, and Tourism Management student, was our host. She’s taking an independent study course with PSU professor Tammy Buckley, who is a friend of our Lock Haven host Julie Lammel.
This DGW screening was Kellye’s class–she spent the semester learning about event-planning and coordinating by setting this up.
She also got us dinner at one of PSU’s dining halls, where Andrew took advantage of the all-day cereal dispensers.
During the screening, the exhausted crew caught up on some sleep to get ready for the post-screening Q-and-A.
In coordinating with other teachers, especially in the Rec. Management Department, Kellye and Tammy got the screening advertised to many classes. Attendance also counted as extra credit for many students.
It was another example of the innovative measures our hosts go to in coordinating screenings.
Thanks, Kellye and Tammy for coordinating, and Julie for spreading the word to Tammy! Props, Penn State!
