Darius Goes West: MTV Broadcast Details

September 19, 2009

In 2005, Darius Weems, and his eleven best friends left their hometown of Athens, GA. They set a course for California, where Darius hoped to raise awareness for his disease, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), by convincing MTV to customize his wheelchair on the hit show, Pimp my Ride.

DMD is the number one genetic killer of children in the world. The viewers of Pimp My Ride represent the age group that lives and dies with DMD, and the generation that scientists believe will discover a cure for this disease.

If you’ve seen the film, you know the ending. If you haven’t, you can watch it online for free using the new Play It Forward sharing system here.

Thanks to the relentless support of DGW supporters across the country, Darius’ journey will come full circle when MTV broadcasts the film next Sunday.  And the day is special for Darius for other reasons….

On September 27th, 2009, Darius’ twentieth birthday, and the last day of DGW’s year long tour, both MTV2 and MTVU will broadcast Darius Goes West to over 80 million homes.

The broadcast comes as a result of Darius and crew being honored for their tireless advocacy at the prestigious 2009 Do Something Awards.

Happy 20th birthday Darius! I just finished watching your journey and it was incredible. Its amazing that you have such a great family to support your dreams. You’ve done something that most people that aren’t in a wheelchair will never achieve in their life. Keep it going!
