Darius Goes to the Hamptons, Daaaahling

May 28, 2012

Quote of the day: “I wish you could experience what I’m seeing with my eyes right now.”–rapper / producer Dirt, to his daughter over the telephone from an incredible Long Island vista over the ocean.

From Pennsylvania, the crew loaded up and set sail for Long Island, NY.

Long Island has had a special connection with Darius Goes West for a while now. It was one of Darius’s favorite stops on the year-long traveling fund-raiser (click here, here, and here), and our stop there on the Believe Tour saw us reuniting with old friends as well as making new ones.

First up, our buddy Javier led new crew members on a tour of his grandparents’ beachfront house. Javier, like Darius, has DMD. Also like Darius, Javy is a fighter who uses his charisma and wisdom to inspire people in the cause against Duchenne. (Check out the Hope for Javier web site here.)

The crew enjoyed dinner and a gorgeous sunset with Javy, his mom Jen, dad Richie, aunt Stacia, and grandparents. The salmon, chicken, and chocolate chip brownies were all just as breathtaking as the view!

After dinner with old friends, D made some new ones at East Hampton Middle School.

First up was lunch with the school’s top 10 fundraisers, along with nearby high school student Terrence, who also has DMD.

Next, EHMS teacher Lynn Rudolph introduced Darius to an assembly of the school.

Since D was getting ready to perform, Pete accepted this gift, a shop-made wasabi spoon made by EHMS student Eric. Thanks, Eric!

D performed for a raucous crowd. The students were especially pumped to see Melanie Mesiano, the school’s music teacher, join Darius and Dirt to sing the chorus of “Learn to Love”. It was awesome!

After the performance, D posed for photos. Then we spent some time hanging out with Lynn and other members of the EHMS faculty.

Lynn recommended a side trip to Montauk, at the end of Long Island, so we headed out for some fun in the sun.

Pete worked on his photography skills…

and the gang enjoyed the end to a visit they’ll never forget.

Thank you, Long Island!

Thanks so much for coming to our school. You all touched our lives here. The day was magical and your spirit has remained behind with us. Maybe we can do this again next year, and hopefully P. Diddy will be around and not in France when you come ! :-)
