Quote of the day: “Just keep doing what you’re doing.”–Mike Jarvis, FAU head men’s basketball coach, when crew-member John Hadden told him he still had four years of NCAA eligibility.
After our stops in Orlando and Tampa, Darius made his way east toward Boca Raton. His first stop: at a Florida Atlantic University men’s basketball practice!
Head coach Mike Jarvis graciously hosted us.
Darius loves basketball more than any other sport, so it was a lot of fun to meet with Coach Jarvis and the Owls.
Later, we headed over to the Muvico for a screening.
With the help of Darius’s tireless charisma…
an awesome volunteer team…
and a fantastic audience…
south Florida gave us a great reception.
We get inspiration from young people who identify with Darius’s goals…
and it was great to hang out with our hosts. Alison Seckler set up our screening, and John, her husband, spoke after the screening.
John’s brother is Benjy Seckler—Dr. Seckler from the movie. Benjy and his wife, Tracy, run Charley’s Fund, which is Darius Goes West’s fiscal beneficiary, and John and Alison and their family are also big supporters of the fight against Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
The next day, the Secklers came with us to the FAU vs. SE-Louisiana University, where Darius served as honorary coach during the game.
We, of course, were rooting for Coach Jarvis’s Owls…
but they were down early.
Luckily, they got the lead.
Then, after a rousing halftime speech that Coach Jarvis insisted Darius give, they pulled away, winning the game.
The game also gave us a chance to show off our new DGW jerseys, printed by two longtime friends of the cause at Shirtworks, in Athens. Thanks, Jackie and Kathy! The jerseys are great!
We had a blast in Boca. Thanks so much, Alison, John, Seckler family, Coach Jarvis, FAU basketball team, and Boca Raton!
