D in Dallas, Pt. 2

February 17, 2009

Quote of the day: “When you go out and you help a community, the rewards can outweigh anything you put in”–crew-member John Harmon to the audience at our SMU screening.

After our time in Plano and Episcopal School of Dallas, Darius and the crew were eager to meet more of Dallas’s wonderful people.

Next we went to a screening at the beautiful Lakewood Theater, where we met with…

Amanda Holmes. Amanda is a nurse at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas. She’s a friend of Tim Campbell, our Akron host. Amanda made the trip to Akron in September, and Tim returned the favor by coming to Dallas for Amanda’s screening. It was GREAT to see both of them again.

Amanda and our other Lakewood coordinator, Haley, did a great job with the screening, and Alan and Rita Gold and Michael and Mary Lee Broder sponsored the venue.

The crowd gave us a huge standing ovation.

It was an honor to have John Killian, from Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy, in attendance. John answered some of the audience’s questions about muscular dystrophy.

After the screening and the question-and-answer session, Amanda and Tim hopped behind the counter and helped us with the mayhem of merchandise sales. When things get this chaotic, it’s definitely a good thing for DVD sales!

Lakewood was a great venue and a great screening. Thanks so much, Amanda, Haley, John, Mary Lee & Michael, Alan & Rita, Tim, Katie, Lakewood employees, and everyone else involved!

The next day saw Darius back in Plano, at Prince of Peace Catholic School

We met with POP’s middle school students in the breath-taking sanctuary.

Teacher David Sinagub was our host, a great guy with some incredible students.

Simone Hill, who helped with our Plano screening at Studio Movie Grill, got us in touch with POP, where her sons Marcus, Tyus, and Darius (seriously!) go to school.

The crew was a big hit with the students…

as was the RV. Thank you, Prince of Peace!

Rounding out our few days in Dallas was a screening at SMU, set up by Christina Zitaglio and Sam Mansfield. SMU’s KA chapter got the screening space.

We were treated to some banging shoes by Marc Sclochter of Shoebacca

and styling cowboy hats by Mary Lee and Kate Broder and the Golds.

The new shoes and hats had us feeling pretty fresh…

so much so that we took the stage in our new threads.

Thanks, Sam, Christina, SMU’s KAs, the Golds, the Broders, and Marc!

Finally, we rode off toward the sunset (okay, truth be told, we left amidst an ice storm), headed to a screening in El Paso.

We were going back west, in what was Darius and the crew’s first time driving west since the original trip. As we rode, we couldn’t help but reflect on how grateful we were for the incredible hospitality Dallas and Chapel Hill had showed us, and we hoped the generosity would continue.

Thank you Dallas!

It must mean some late nights since your days on the road are filled with activity. How long will this trip last and where are you headed after El Paso?
