D Heads North to Delaware

May 23, 2012

Quote of the day: Man, we need to take classes for sign language.”–new crew member Ced, after our visit to the Delaware School for the Deaf.

After Chapel Hill, D and crew headed to Newark, Delaware, for another school performance.

This time, the Delaware School for the Deaf hosted us.

Long time friend of the crew Tracy Holmes helped with much of the logistics of bringing us. And that meant we got to enjoy Tracy’s peerless hospitality at the Courtyard by Marriott Newark-University of Delaware. Tracy is seriously the bomb. (She even took most of these pictures!)

The school visit was incredible. Students watched the movie….

Participated in a question-and-answer session with Darius….

And enjoyed a great performance.

(Props to the interpreters, including Teresa, pictured. Long after we were gone, Dirt, Darius, and crew marveled at the way they signed the lyrics. Great job!)

After the performance came a very special surprise. Seniors at the school had given up their senior class trip to make a donation to fight DMD! Huge props.

The students themselves got a surprise when the school board heard the story: the school board presented the senior class with a trip to a Phillies game, including special backstage-style access. They earned it!

Dean of Students Richard Pelletier and all the teachers and staff at the Delaware School for the Deaf have a great group of students.

Afterwards, D and the crew got to hang out with the students and sign some autographs.

Then it was off to dinner with Tracy, whom we always love visiting.

Thank you, Newark!
