Akron Ohio–Let it Rain!

September 17, 2008

This blog is three days late because Tim Campbell, his family, his friends, and his classmates packed over a months worth of generosity into a single screening.

The Tim Campbell Experience did not begin in Akron. It began in Cleveland the day before. Tim, his sister Amy, and his parents treated us to a Mongolian BBQ lunch where we ate for the first time since jamming DVDs into our microwave and stove (see blog 2).

Thank goodness it was an all you can eat buffet.

The Chef entertained us by juggling what Darius referred to as “meat swords”….

…and we were off to Akron!

It was drizzling when we arrived at the Akron Civic Center. It was perfect movie watching weather, but our movie was almost a side note to the magic Tim made happen.

The festivities began with a cake and signature Akron pizza.

We enjoyed the refreshments with an entire army of volunteers. The group, all in goslabi green threads, consisted of Tim’s friends and classmates. Most of them live in Akron, but a lot of them traveled from all over the country just to pitch in.

Akron’s Mayor, Donald Plusquellic, proclaimed Sept. 12 as “Darius Goes West Day!”. July 22 is Darius Goes West day in Athens, and having a second day named after our project is an unparalleled compliment. Thank you Mayor Plusquellic! Tim and Akron weren’t finished yet….

In front of Darius is a signed poster from Darius’s hero, Lebron James, and as if that wasn’t enough, Dr. Seckler of Charleysfund.org (our beneficiary), is holding a certificate that promises Darius a Goodyear blimp ride redeemable anytime this year!

Oh… Did we mention that this all happened in the most beautiful theater we’ve ever seen?

To give you a sense of scale, this is the full crew at the post screening Q&A. Tim’s teacher, Dr. Zarconi, is on the far left. He fielded and directed questions to us from a packed crowd!

Tim, you are a rainmaker. You gave us this stunning view, and we will never forget it. We cannot thank you, your family, or your friends enough.
