6th DGW Day(s) - Report + Pictures

July 29, 2010

The 6th Annual DGW Day festivities ended with a bang as fans lifted Darius to the stage in downtown Athens, GA, enabling him to drop a few verses with Grammy-nominated rap artists, The Nappy Roots. That’s how the festivities ended. This is how they began….

Six years ago, Mayor Heidi Davidson christened Darius and the crew’s original journey with a “Darius Goes West Day” declaration from the Athens’ courthouse steps. Since that day, the crew has traveled over 100,000 miles to over 40 states and raised over $1.7 million for Duchenne muscular dystrophy research. Darius Goes West Day itself has sprawled into almost a full week of events, and attracts DGW fans annually from all around the country.

One of two new additions to the DGW Day line up this year was a poker tournament hosted by Dee Simbro of the Georgia Poker Club. This tournament was designed as a feeder tournament for an even larger tourney being held this October in Vegas. The occasion? Darius’ 21st birthday! The Vegas tournament is the brain child of World Series of Poker Pro, Bryan Devonshire, and is open to anyone willing to make the trip.

The second new event was a Casino Night, also hosted at Lucky Dawg Billiards by the venerable Dee Simbro. The event, which featured all the classic casino games….

…a rock paper scissors contest….

…a raffle hosted by some incredible volunteers…

….and even a marked-down scooter for sale (donated by Top Dog Scooters), was a huge success.

The next night it was time for family fun at the DGW Day Carnival, which took place at the old Farmers Market. Huge Props to Georgia 4-H for arranging for us to use this awesome venue!

While Darius answered questions from Athens Banner Herald reporter, Ryan Blackburn, for this great article, DGW fans made merry on….

…a 36ft blow up slip n’ slide…

…tested their strength in a two-track tension racer…

…drained three-pointers on a blow-up b-ball goal….

…enjoyed Mr. Clown

…contributed to art created by the I Art Athens gang…

…accepted & autographed art contributed by even younger supporters…

…fought gravity on a mechanical bull….

…puzzled over Howie The Great’s magic tricks…

…painted their faces….

….trotted it out with Mane Event Pony Parties & their portable petting zoo….

….sweated it out to tunes provided by Kevin Cheek at Dawg-town Entertainment….

…ate incredible food provided by Grill master Burney Dobbs, while wearing event shirts donated by our long-time friends at Shirtworks….

…dunked all five Athens-Clarke County Mayorial candidates in the dunk tank (future blog post on this)…

…and watched Athens celebrities, like Cohutta Grindstaff of MTV’s The Real World/Sydney eat spoonfuls of wasabi (future blog post on this, too).

Not even the rain could keep Athens’ finest from throwing the best DGW Day carnival ever.

The next day, our friends at Athens’ one and only independent movie theater, Cine, showed DGW on the big screen to a packed out crowd. Darius & crew answered questions about the movie/movement and then headed over to New Earth Music Hall.

Modern Skirts kicked things off with a killer set for hundreds of onlookers.

This was Modern Skirts’ first year playing DGW Day, and we’re very grateful that they lent their incredible talents to the cause.

Next up, rap artist, Yelawolf, who recently signed with Interscope Records He wowed the crowd by rapping faster than humanly possible.

Yelawolf, who is known for putting on an incredible live performance, gave Darius tons of love from the stage.

After Yelawolf, talented rapper, D-Focus got the crowd worked up to welcome The Nappy Roots for their third consecutive DGW Day performance. If you haven’t heard the newest Nappy Roots Album, The Pursuit of Nappyness (itunes), then your collection is just plain incomplete. This group of great people make consistently great albums, and they’ve been doing it for years.

And guess who might be on the next Nappy Roots album?

We’ll be releasing Goslabi Challenge videos, Dunk Tank videos, rap videos, and many more pictures over the coming days. In the meantime, enjoy a rap Darius did earlier this year to thank all of his DGW fans (see video below).

HUGE THANKS to all of our volunteers and all of our patrons for making the 6th Annual DGW DAY THE BEST ONE YET!

If you made it to this years event, please share this page so that everyone will know what they missed!
